Winston Manufacturing Partners with UofL Medicine to Build Pediatric Treadmill
Winston Manufacturing is proud to be a partner in the development and construction of a new pediatric treadmill for University of Louisville Medicine.
The treadmill is utilized to treat children with spinal cord injuries. Children can experience substantial progress through locomotor training, a therapy designed to help them recover the ability to walk, stand, and sit. The child is suspended over the treadmill as their feet are moved in a stepping motion by trainers. This taps into the capabilities of the child’s spinal cord to regain movement control.
This treatment was initially developed using treadmills designed for adults. This presented several challenges, both for the child and the trainers. The new treadmill makes the therapy easier and more comfortable for the child and trainers.
“We were happy to be a part of this project,” said Valerie Shelton, CEO of Winston Industries. “It highlights our fabrication and electronics capabilities as well as our ability to think outside the box and complete large and small assembly projects and integrations. If we can do all of that while helping a child breathe, that is something we can all feel good about.”
The project was a partnership between Winston Manufacturing, UofL Medicine, Adams:Kinkade Design, and several other companies and organizations. Winston Manufacturing assembled the final design. The unit consists of sheet metal fabrication sub-assemblies (built by Winston Manufacturing), purchased components and software, electronics and wiring harnesses (built by Win2uit Elec). Final assembly was completed by Winston Manufacturing.
Three treadmills have been completed so far, for pediatric hospitals in Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Houston. Winston will build two more units in 2020. There is the potential for more units to be ordered in the future.
